Applications for the DH at Berkeley Summer Institute are now closed.

Digital Humanities at Berkeley will be running a summer institute from August 17-21, where participants can choose from five week-long, intensive workshops. The program is free of cost for all participants. Selected participants will also receive a $2,000 fellowship. All workshop participants will also be invited to special events with guest speakers who will present during the institute. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The summer institute is open to faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students affiliated with Berkeley as of fall semester 2015. To apply, please submit a statement of interest (no more than 500 words) using this form by May 15th. Statements will be uploaded using the form; PDFs are preferred. Statements should address your research interests, as well as the data you hope to work with. If you have a specific idea for a research project using the skills you will develop in the workshop, please include it as well.

Participants are encouraged to participate in teams of two in order to build the foundation for ongoing projects. Teams might be made up of a faculty member and a graduate student, two graduate students, a graduate student and an undergrad, or any other combination of roles. Each team can submit a single application that addresses the shared research or project interests of both individuals.

Institute requirements

The Institute will be a full-time commitment for the week of August 17-21; participants agree to attend from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for each of the five days of the institute. Participants will receive attention for instructors and support on their projects. Participants will need to bring their own laptop to the institute. Workshop instructors will confirm final technical requirements for their class several weeks before the institute. Participants agree to either (a) bring a laptop that meets specified requirements to the institute or (b) contact a DH consultant to discuss borrowing a laptop that meets these requirements.
